The first major tour of the year the “Tour of Carlingford “ event will take place on Sunday the 1st of April 2012, leaving Silverbridge football club at 10.00am, registration from 9.15am and follow the beautiful and picturesque trail through Cooley into Carlingford and then through Newry returning to Silverbridge. Signing on fee is £15. Route - leaving silverbridge GFC at 10.00am, south to Dundalk, left at Lisdoo Arms to Ballymascanlon Roundabout and a fast spin down to Carlingford where tea/coffee and water will be availble at The Four Seasons Hotel. Then north along the coast road to Newry, along Merchants Quay , pass Canal Court, then left at Monaghan Street towards Camlough and back to Silverbridge a total of 50miles. Motor bikes marshals will be on duty at the main junctions and back up vans will be there to help where needed. Soup and sandwiches served back at the hall.  This is a great event to shake of the cobwebs of winter and test the legs.  Definitely and event for those wanting to try cycling. Difficulty rating 4 out of 10

The “Tour of South Armagh” will take place on Sunday the 20th of May leaving from the Mountain House outside Camlough at 10.00am.  This is an event not to be missed for those keen on cycling.  It has a choice of two routes covering either 60km or the more arduous 100km route. The challenge awaiting you takes you through some of the best unspoilt country in South Armagh , starting with an easy few miles into Markethill turning left towards Keady and then onto a steady challenging mountain climb to be rewarded with a glorious downhill freewheel of 2 miles into Newtownhamilton. The short route heads back to the starting point along the main Newry road whilst the longer route heads through the undulating roads of Culloville, Creggan, Silverbridge, Mullaghbane, Forkhill, Meigh, Camlough and back to the start via the sharp climbs at Sturgan Brae and Lislea village.

Last year over 120 took part and everyone including those doing it for the first time said it was one of the best days cycling of the year. Difficulty rating for the full tour is 8 out of 10.

Registration is from 9.00am at The Mountain House Lounge which is on the main Newry to Newtownhamilton Road, two miles past Camlough. The subscription is £15/E15 and all proceeds go to our nominated charities.

The tour will get underway at 10.00am.

The half way food stop is in Newtownhamilton Community Centre and soup and sandwiches will be served at the finish in The Mountain House.

Cycling Ireland insurance is available and helmets must be worn.

Both routes are marked; bike marshals will be at all major junctions and a back up van will support the riders.

Two cyclists Tim Langford and Chris Peel are cycling around N Ireland between 2-5th June to raise funds for the charity Parkinson’s UK. The first leg of the journey begins in Belfast and we have agreed to cover the cost of their accommodation at the end of their first day in The Square Hotel, Crossmaglen. They should be cycling through Newry at around 3.00pm and it is hoped that club members join them on the final part of the leg out to Crossmaglen. They are accompanied by two friends in a support van. I will let you know more details as they become available.  Cyclists can  make a donation to the guys on the day and perhaps join them for a beer in the evening if possible.
